Pittsburgh Photographer: Mallory, Class of 2014

August 9th, 2013

Mallory and her mom drove some distance to my studio in Butler for her senior portrait session, only to have an unexpected thunderstorm put a damper on things. After spending an hour or so shooting in the studio, we were fortunate to see the sunshine once again and moved the shoot outdoors. I always encourage my seniors to do a combination of urban and natural settings for their portraits. I love shooting in fields, but Pennsylvania tends to be really, really green in the spring and the summer. Urban settings offer such a great variety in color and texture, which really balances all of of that green.

This is the outfit she showed up in. She was NOT planning on using it for her shoot, but I thought the shorts were super cute !

Pittsburgh Photographer: Kelsey, Model Session

July 31st, 2013

Kelsey was one of my senior portrait clients 4 years ago. I first met her several years ago during a local theater production of Annie (she was Annie!). Her mom is also my son’s dentist so I see her parents at least twice per year. They are a wonderful family and some of the nicest people I know. A few weeks ago, I asked Kelsey if she would like to come model some dresses for me before she heads of to ¬†law school. I haven’t even had a chance to look at most of the images yet, but here are a few that jumped out at me.

At the studio with my garage sale vanity I found this past spring. I am always on the look out for vintage or interesting pieces I can use for portrait sessions.

Senior Portraits in Pittsburgh: Hadly, 2014

July 27th, 2013

A few weeks ago a I shot a photo session with Hadly in Pittsburgh. Ever since my senior portrait session with Paige last year, I have been getting a lot of requests for “the bridge shot”. Please note, I only photograph people on the bridge when it is CLOSED. A lot of people have asked me how I managed to stop the traffic. Please use good sense when taking pictures!

Hadly was a lovely person, inside and out, and she had the most amazing blue eyes. It rained the entire drive to the session and I was worried we were going to have to reschedule. But the skies cleared, and while we didn’t have any sun, I was actually in love with the overcast day. As much as I love the backlighting and fun shadow play you can get on sunny days, colors tend to be more deep and vivid on overcast days.

I had such a fun time exploring a few Pittsburgh neighborhoods with Rupali and her Mom!

Pittsburgh Photographer: Taylor at the Studio

July 4th, 2013

I met Taylor a few years ago when she was my senior spokesmodel. She had some time over her summer break from college to come to the studio for a shoot. She only had a few days, as she was heading off to NYC for a summer dance intensive. Taylor is also a talented photographer in her own right. Pittsburgh Photographer: Recent Senior Portraits

June 19th, 2013

It’s getting to that time of year again where I am so busy shooting I don’t have time to blog! Here are a few favorites from my recent senior portrait sessions. Hopefully, I can post more images later. Don’t forget to check out my facebook page for the most recent updates.

Brynn plans to study theater after she finishes high school. She was very expressive and was so much fun to work with!

Heather is adorable. She is also super smart. She plans to study genetics. I love learning about my seniors’ plans for the future.

Kennedy is a dancer and photographer. I’ve noticed a lot of seniors who have plans to work in the photography field book with me. I take that as a compliment! She has already shot her first wedding and plans to pursue a business degree in college, so she can run a photography business better. This is very smart thinking and a route I highly recommend.

Don’t be fooled by this serious shot of Allison. She was almost all smiles during our shoot. Allison was referred to me by one of my 2013 seniors. I hope I get a chance to post more pictures from her shoot so you can see her gorgeous red hair!

And finally Kristie, who was one of my seniors from a few years ago. She came over to the studio for a test shoot and it was wonderful to see her again. Kristie is going to be studying hair and makeup this fall and I hope she and I will be able to work together on some projects at the studio.

Pittsburgh Photographer: Julia in Studio

June 10th, 2013

Julia is one of my wonderful seniors from a few years ago. She came to visit me as the new studio space and we shot a few images to demonstrate some of the features of studio. Many of the seniors I work with are hesitant to have part of their shoot in the studio. They worry that studio shoots= old school or boring. But take time to look through any top fashion magazine and you will see many, many images shot in studios. I am fortunate that my studio has both a large natural light shooting area with interesting architecture, as well as an area I can use for studio lighting. Studio can be modern, fun, and fresh! I encourage all of my seniors to shoot at least part of their session at the studio. And if you happen to need a traditional picture for the yearbook or to give to your grandparents, we can accomplish that as well.

My sweet husband found this vintage couch and had it repaired for me.

The studio ceilings are very high and perfect for dance portraits.

Julia is so graceful. I love this image of her in the window.

Pittsburgh Photographer: First Shoot in the New Studio

May 27th, 2013

Well, I had my first photo shoot in the new studio. Emily, who has worked with me before, came over and let me play around with the light. She is sooo pretty and a really lovely person.

We started out in the natural light area of the studio.

Next we moved onto some studio lighting. The studio is 2700 square feet so there is a lot of room! I set up a studio lighting area on “The Dark Side” , AKA the opposite end of the room from the windows. If there is one thing I want to convey to my clients this year it is that studio lighting does not have to equal old school and boring!

Finally we headed outside for some sunshine. The studio is surrounded by plenty of great urban shooting areas. Emily rocked a retro look here which I absolutely love!

The studio is located on the 3rd floor of the Heritage Building (middle row of windows) above Benjamin Beetle clothing.
